Google has used Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal for years, but the real reason to care is simpler: faster websites sell more. Every extra second of load time increases bounce rate and lowers conversions, especially on mobile.
Here is a plain-English guide to the three metrics and the fixes that move them.
The three metrics
| Metric | What it measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| LCP – Largest Contentful Paint | How fast the main content appears | ≤ 2.5 s |
| INP – Interaction to Next Paint | How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks | ≤ 200 ms |
| CLS – Cumulative Layout Shift | How much the layout jumps while loading | ≤ 0.1 |
Step 1: Measure the right data
Start with field data in Google Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report or the CrUX section of PageSpeed Insights. Lab tools like Lighthouse are great for debugging but do not reflect real users on real networks.
Step 2: Fix LCP
- Optimise the hero image: serve WebP or AVIF, size it correctly, and add
fetchpriority="high". - Don’t lazy-load above-the-fold images.
- Reduce server response time with page caching and a CDN.
- Remove render-blocking CSS and fonts — inline critical CSS and use
font-display: swap.
Step 3: Fix INP
- Cut JavaScript. Remove unused plugins, sliders and tracking scripts.
- Defer third-party scripts like chat widgets until after interaction.
- Break up long tasks so the main thread can respond to user input.
Step 4: Fix CLS
- Always set
widthandheighton images and videos. - Reserve space for ads, embeds and cookie banners.
- Avoid inserting content above existing content after the page loads.
Platform-specific quick wins
- WordPress: use a lightweight theme, a quality caching plugin, and audit plugins ruthlessly.
- Shopify: remove apps you no longer use — many leave scripts behind — and compress product images.
- Webflow: limit interactions on mobile and self-host large Lottie files sparingly.
Make speed a habit
Performance is not a one-time project. New plugins, campaigns and tracking pixels slowly erode your scores. Set a performance budget and check Search Console monthly.
