Inside the Logo & Brand Identity Design Process: From Brief to Brand Guidelines

Design sketches in a notebook next to a smartphone

Your logo is often the first thing people see — on your website, packaging, social profiles and invoices. But a memorable brand isn’t built from a logo alone. It is a system of colours, typography, imagery and voice that makes your business instantly recognisable.

Here is how our design team takes a brand from blank page to finished identity.

Step 1: Discovery

We start with questions, not sketches:

  • Who are your customers, and what do they value?
  • Who are your competitors, and how do they look?
  • What three words should people associate with your brand?
  • Where will the brand appear most — screens, print, signage, packaging?

The output is a short creative brief everyone agrees on.

Step 2: Research and mood boards

We collect visual references — colour moods, typography styles and imagery — to align on direction before drawing anything. This avoids wasted rounds later.

Step 3: Sketching and concepts

Designers explore dozens of rough ideas on paper and screen, then refine the strongest three into digital concepts. Each concept is shown in context: on a business card, website header and social profile.

Step 4: Refinement

Once you pick a direction, we refine proportions, spacing and curves, and test the logo at tiny sizes (favicons, app icons) and in single colour. A great logo works everywhere.

Step 5: Colour and typography

  • Colour palette — primary, secondary and neutral colours with HEX, RGB and CMYK values, checked for accessible contrast.
  • Typography — heading and body fonts that suit your personality and work on the web.

Step 6: Brand guidelines

The brand guidelines document explains how to use everything correctly: clear space, minimum sizes, colour usage, do’s and don’ts, photography style and tone of voice. It keeps your brand consistent as your team and suppliers grow.

Step 7: Rolling out the brand

Finally we apply the identity to business cards, letterheads, social media templates, brochures and your website.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Following trends that will date quickly.
  • Too many colours or fonts.
  • Designing only for print and forgetting small screens.
  • Skipping guidelines, leading to inconsistent use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does a logo and brand identity project take?

A logo alone typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. A full brand identity with guidelines and collateral usually takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on revision rounds.

What files should I receive at the end?

Vector files (SVG, AI or EPS), high-resolution PNGs, colour and monochrome versions, favicon sizes and a brand guidelines PDF.

What is the difference between a logo and a brand identity?

A logo is one mark. A brand identity is the full system — logo, colours, typography, imagery style and tone of voice — that makes your business recognisable everywhere.

How many logo concepts will I see?

We typically present three distinct concepts, then refine your chosen direction through revision rounds.

Do I own the copyright to my logo?

Yes. On final payment, full ownership of the approved logo and brand assets is transferred to you.

Can you refresh my existing logo instead of starting over?

Yes. A brand refresh modernises your logo and visuals while keeping the recognition you've already built.

What are brand guidelines and why do I need them?

Brand guidelines document how to use your logo, colours, fonts and imagery so every designer, printer and team member keeps your brand consistent.

Should my logo work in black and white?

Yes. A strong logo works in a single colour and at very small sizes, such as favicons, stamps and embroidery.
