The Complete WordPress Maintenance Checklist for 2026

A WordPress website is never “finished.” Core, themes and plugins release updates constantly, and every unpatched plugin is a potential entry point for hackers. Regular maintenance keeps your site secure, fast and reliable — and it is far cheaper than recovering from a hack.

Here is the checklist we use for our WordPress maintenance clients.

Weekly tasks

  • Back up files and the database, and store copies off-server.
  • Update plugins and themes — test major updates on staging first.
  • Check uptime reports and fix any downtime causes.
  • Review security scan results and failed-login alerts.
  • Delete spam comments and form submissions.

Monthly tasks

  • Update WordPress core (minor releases auto-update; plan major ones).
  • Test a backup restore — a backup you have never restored is just a hope.
  • Run a speed test on key pages and compare with last month.
  • Scan for broken links and fix 404 errors.
  • Review user accounts and remove anyone who no longer needs access.
  • Test contact forms and checkout flows end to end.

Quarterly tasks

  • Audit plugins: remove inactive or abandoned ones, and replace any not updated in a year.
  • Optimise the database: clear revisions, transients and orphaned data.
  • Check PHP version — run a supported version for both security and speed.
  • Review Search Console for crawl errors, Core Web Vitals and security issues.
  • Refresh key content — update outdated stats, pricing and screenshots.

Yearly tasks

  • Renew the domain, SSL certificate and premium licences.
  • Review hosting performance and costs.
  • Run an accessibility check against WCAG guidelines.
  • Revisit design and messaging — does the site still reflect your business?

Security essentials for 2026

  • Two-factor authentication for all admin users.
  • A web application firewall (WAF).
  • Limited login attempts and strong, unique passwords.
  • File permissions locked down and file editing disabled in the dashboard.

Prefer to hand it off?

Maintenance is critical but rarely urgent — which is why it gets skipped. Webyant’s WordPress care plans cover updates, backups, security monitoring and monthly reports, so you can focus on your business. Get a maintenance plan and start 2026 worry-free.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update WordPress plugins?

Security updates should be applied within days. Routine plugin updates can be batched weekly, ideally tested on a staging site first.

How much does WordPress maintenance cost?

It depends on the site's size and complexity. Small business sites typically need a few hours a month, while WooCommerce stores need more frequent checks and testing.

How often should I back up my WordPress website?

At least daily for active sites and stores, with copies kept off-server. Static brochure sites can be backed up weekly.

Is it safe to enable automatic updates?

Auto-updates for minor core releases and trusted plugins are fine. Major updates on business-critical sites should be tested on staging first.

What PHP version should my WordPress site use?

Always run a PHP version that is still receiving security support. Newer versions are also noticeably faster.

What happens if I skip WordPress maintenance?

Outdated plugins are the most common cause of hacked WordPress sites. Neglected sites also become slower and can break when hosting environments change.

Do I need a staging site?

For any business-critical site, yes. A staging copy lets you test updates and changes without risking the live website.

Can Webyant maintain a site we didn't build?

Yes. We start with an audit of themes, plugins, security and performance, fix urgent issues and then move the site onto a regular care plan.
